Ambulance Service from Mumbai to Delhi NCR
Mumbai to Delhi is India's most travelled intercity corridor, and medical transport is no exception. AIIMS Delhi remains the country's foremost referral institute, and Medanta, Fortis Escorts, Max and Ganga Ram give the NCR a concentration of super-speciality capability that draws patients nationally — including from Mumbai.
Traffic moves both ways. Patients travel north for AIIMS appointments, cardiac surgery at Escorts and specialist second opinions, and they travel south to Mumbai for oncology at Tata Memorial and for its own cardiac and neuro centres. There is also a steady flow of corporate and insurance-arranged transfers on this corridor.
Road quality is the redeeming feature of a very long journey. NH-48 is expressway-grade for much of the route with excellent hospital coverage along the way. But twenty-six hours is twenty-six hours, and for anyone genuinely unwell we will point to the air corridor instead — it is one of the busiest in the country and there is no good reason to spend a day and a night on the road when flying is straightforward.

Why families book this route:
- Referrals to AIIMS Delhi, Medanta Gurugram and the NCR super-speciality hospitals
- Patients returning to Mumbai after treatment in Delhi, and the reverse
- Mortuary transfers where the family travels alongside the vehicle
- Corporate and insurance-arranged transfers between the two cities
How We Drive Mumbai to Delhi NCR
Route taken
NH-48 via Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur and Gurugram
NH-48 runs the full distance from Mumbai to Delhi and is expressway-grade for much of it. The Gujarat leg is excellent, the Rajasthan section through Udaipur and Jaipur is good, and the final approach through Gurugram is dense but well-served. Of all the thousand-kilometre-plus corridors out of Mumbai, this is the one with the best road quality throughout.

Terrain and conditions
Flat to Ahmedabad, moderate Aravalli sections around Udaipur, then open plains to Delhi. The two seasonal factors are severe summer heat across Rajasthan and dense winter fog in the NCR belt between December and January — the latter can add many hours and is a genuine safety consideration.
Crew, oxygen and rest planning
Two drivers minimum in strict planned relay, a paramedic for the full journey, and a doctor on ICU transfers. Halts every three to four hours for patient care and crew rotation, timed around the good hospital coverage at Surat, Ahmedabad, Udaipur and Jaipur. Oxygen for the full duration with large reserve, and permits for four state crossings arranged before departure.

The right choice depends on the patient's condition and the distance, not on what costs the most. Here is how the three compare.
Road Ambulance
Up to roughly 600 km, and any distance for mortuary transfers
- Door to door — ward to ward, with no transfers in between
- Fastest to arrange; can leave within the hour
- Family can travel alongside the vehicle
- Full ICU capability including ventilator and infusion pumps
Trade-off: Beyond 12–14 hours the journey itself becomes a clinical burden for a fragile patient.
Train Ambulance
Stable patients on long routes where flying is not affordable
- Far gentler than road over very long distances
- Considerably cheaper than air for the same journey
- Suits stable patients who need supervision but not intensive care
- Road ambulances still handle both the first and last legs
Trade-off: Tied to train schedules and station access, so it is rarely the fastest option.
Air Ambulance
Critical patients, and generally anything beyond 800–1,000 km
- Hours instead of a day or more on the road
- Full flying ICU with critical-care crew on board
- The right answer for unstable and ventilator-dependent patients
- Ground ambulances connect both airports to the hospitals
Trade-off: Costs substantially more, needs clearances, and adds two extra patient transfers.
Our recommendation for Mumbai to Delhi NCR
Twenty-six to twenty-eight hours by road is a serious journey. It suits stable patients, mortuary transfers and families who want to travel together. For a critical patient, the Mumbai–Delhi air corridor is among the busiest in India and air ambulance is clearly the better option — we will recommend it plainly. Train ambulance is also well suited here given the strong rail link.

Common Questions — Mumbai to Delhi NCR
Twenty-six to twenty-eight hours for roughly 1,400 km on NH-48, including planned halts and driver changes. Winter fog in the NCR belt between December and January can extend this considerably, and we factor that into the estimate rather than quoting a best-case figure.
