CPR Basics – Step-by-Step Guides
When to Use CPR
- Person is unconscious and not breathing
- No pulse or signs of life
- Choking victim becomes unresponsive
- Drowning or cardiac arrest situation
- Drug overdose with breathing stopped
CPR Steps for Adults
- 1Check responsiveness - tap and shout
- 2Call emergency services (AIVA) immediately
- 3Start chest compressions - push hard and fast (100-120/min)
- 4Compress at least 2 inches deep in center of chest
- 5Give rescue breaths (30 compressions: 2 breaths)
- 6Continue until help arrives or person shows signs of life
What NOT to Do
- Don't stop compressions unnecessarily
- Don't forget to call emergency services first
- Don't give CPR if person is breathing normally
- Don't lean on the chest between compressions
