Pregnancy Emergency – Step-by-Step Guides
When to Call Emergency Services
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
- Severe abdominal pain or cramping
- Sudden severe headache or vision changes
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain
- Water breaking before 37 weeks
- Decreased fetal movement
- Signs of preterm labor (contractions before 37 weeks)
Signs of Pregnancy Complications
- Severe swelling in hands, face, or feet (preeclampsia)
- Fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
- Pain or burning during urination
- Gush or trickle of fluid from vagina
- Regular contractions before 37 weeks (preterm labor)
- Severe nausea and vomiting (hyperemesis)
Immediate Steps
- 1Call emergency services (AIVA) immediately
- 2Help the woman lie down on her left side
- 3Keep her calm and reassured
- 4Gather hospital bag and medical records if possible
- 5Time contractions if present
- 6Do not insert anything into vagina if bleeding
- 7Stay with her until help arrives
Emergency Childbirth (If Delivery is Imminent)
- 1Call emergency services and follow their instructions
- 2Wash hands if possible and put on gloves
- 3Help the woman find a comfortable position
- 4Support the baby's head as it emerges
- 5Do not pull the baby - let it come naturally
- 6Keep baby warm and place on mother's chest
What NOT to Do
- Don't ignore bleeding or severe pain
- Don't take any medication without doctor's advice
- Don't eat or drink if C-section may be needed
- Don't insert anything into the vagina
- Don't let her stand or walk if heavily bleeding
- Don't delay calling for emergency help
