Ambulance Service from Mumbai to Pune
Mumbai to Pune is the busiest outstation ambulance route in Maharashtra, and the shortest genuine intercity transfer AIVA runs. The two cities sit roughly 150 km apart on an expressway built for exactly this kind of movement, which makes it possible to shift even an unstable patient between tertiary centres inside three and a half hours.
Demand runs in both directions. Pune's oncology, transplant and orthopaedic centres draw patients out of Mumbai, while Mumbai's cardiac and neuro specialists draw them back. A large share of bookings are planned discharges — a patient stabilised in a Mumbai hospital going home to Pune, or the reverse — rather than emergencies.
Because the corridor is short and predictable, this is one of the few outstation routes where a ventilated patient can be moved with the same clinical confidence as an intra-city transfer. The ambulance carries the full oxygen requirement for the trip plus reserve, and the paramedic stays with the patient from bed to bed.

Why families book this route:
- Planned discharge from a Mumbai hospital back home to Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad or Hinjewadi
- Referral to Pune's transplant, oncology and orthopaedic centres
- Return transfer to Mumbai for cardiac, neuro or cancer specialist review
- Accident victims picked up on the expressway itself and moved to whichever city is closer
How We Drive Mumbai to Pune
Route taken
Mumbai–Pune Expressway (Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway) + NH-48
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is the most ambulance-friendly corridor in Maharashtra. It is six-lane, access-controlled, lit through the tunnel sections and patrolled around the clock, which means a critical patient can be moved at a steady speed instead of the stop-start crawl of an ordinary highway. Ambulances usually enter at Kalamboli or Panvel and exit at Kiwale or Chandani Chowk depending on which side of Pune the receiving hospital sits on.

Terrain and conditions
The one demanding stretch is the Bhor Ghat climb between Khopoli and Lonavala, where the road gains height quickly through a series of tunnels. Heavy monsoon can bring visibility down sharply on this section and occasional landslide clearing near the Adoshi tunnel adds delay. Outside the ghat the route is flat and fast.
Crew, oxygen and rest planning
A single crew handles this journey comfortably — a driver plus a paramedic, with a critical-care nurse or doctor added for ventilated patients. One oxygen reserve beyond the calculated requirement is loaded as standard. No planned rest halt is scheduled; the ambulance runs through unless the patient's condition calls for a stop.

What Your Mumbai to Pune Quote Covers

Included in the quoted figure
- Fuel for the full one-way journey
- All toll plazas and interstate permits on the route
- Driver allowance and relay-driver cost on long hauls
- Return fare of the vehicle to Mumbai
- Oxygen cylinders and consumption during transit
- Trained paramedic or EMT for the entire journey

What shapes the figure
- Ambulance type — patient transport, BLS, ALS/cardiac, ICU/ventilator or freezer van
- One-way road distance and the vehicle's return leg
- Oxygen requirement, and whether a ventilator or infusion pumps run throughout
- Whether a doctor is needed on board in addition to the paramedic
- Night departure, public holidays and same-hour emergency dispatch
- Which Pune exit the receiving hospital needs — Chandani Chowk, Kiwale or a Nagar Road drop changes the running distance
- Expressway toll for the ambulance category
- Whether the transfer is scheduled or a same-hour emergency dispatch
Tell us the pickup address, the destination and the patient's condition. We will confirm the ambulance type and the full cost on the same call.
Call +91 74001 94039 for a quoteRoad, Train or Air Ambulance?
The right choice depends on the patient's condition and the distance, not on what costs the most. Here is how the three compare.
Road Ambulance
Up to roughly 600 km, and any distance for mortuary transfers
- Door to door — ward to ward, with no transfers in between
- Fastest to arrange; can leave within the hour
- Family can travel alongside the vehicle
- Full ICU capability including ventilator and infusion pumps
Trade-off: Beyond 12–14 hours the journey itself becomes a clinical burden for a fragile patient.
Train Ambulance
Stable patients on long routes where flying is not affordable
- Far gentler than road over very long distances
- Considerably cheaper than air for the same journey
- Suits stable patients who need supervision but not intensive care
- Road ambulances still handle both the first and last legs
Trade-off: Tied to train schedules and station access, so it is rarely the fastest option.
Air Ambulance
Critical patients, and generally anything beyond 800–1,000 km
- Hours instead of a day or more on the road
- Full flying ICU with critical-care crew on board
- The right answer for unstable and ventilator-dependent patients
- Ground ambulances connect both airports to the hospitals
Trade-off: Costs substantially more, needs clearances, and adds two extra patient transfers.
Our recommendation for Mumbai to Pune
At 150 km this is firmly a road-ambulance route. A road transfer is door-to-door and typically completes in about the same time it would take to arrange, board and clear an air transfer — so air ambulance is rarely justified here unless the patient cannot tolerate any road movement at all. Train ambulance adds station-to-station handling for no meaningful time saving. Book a road ICU ambulance and go direct.

Common Questions — Mumbai to Pune
A road ambulance covers the 150 km in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours using the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Heavy monsoon in the Bhor Ghat section between Khopoli and Lonavala can add 30 to 45 minutes. We plan departure timing around the ghat rather than around Mumbai traffic, because the ghat is the less predictable part.
